History of Clanton Plains Baptist Church
Clanton Plains Baptist Church was organized in September 1926. The church first met in a brush arbor. This brush arbor was located where the current cemetery is. Land for the church was donated by Mr. Sandy McNair of Patrick, SC. The first church building was constructed in 1928 and burned in 1940. It was rebuilt in 1941. The lumber for the new building was cut at Bailey's Sawmill and transported by Mr. Howard Martin and other individuals in the community- members of Clanton Plains as well as non-members.
The General Baptist Board gave $250.00 in 1948 to help pay for Sunday School rooms to be built. Fathful members secured pledges throughout the community to purcahse benches for the Santuary. Two additional Sunday School rooms and a front porch was added in 1971. The old Sunday School rooms were remodeled in 1980. As the church was growing, we had to build another four Sunday School rooms in 1984. The majority of the work on the additional four rooms was perfomed by church members. A special service was held on February 10, 1985 dedicating these Sunday School rooms to God's work.
A mortgage burning ceremony was held on April 17, 1988. The church was debt free after remodeling the sanctuary - carpet, windows, pews, pulpit furniture, piano, baptistery, and a sound system.
Construction was begun again in 2003 to remodel the front of the church with the addition of two handicap accessible restrooms, a foyer and a new porch.
The Fellowship Hall was constructed in 1962. Church members voted to upgrade the Fellowship Hall in 2007. This involved enlarging the Fellowship Hall as well as connecting it to the Church building. This was completed in 2008.
